On sunny days they visit the apiary and check their bees’ health and food stock.

February: First blooms of the year and bees start flying outside their hive. Beehives are still in the places where they use to spend wintertime, i.e. Southern Greece. However, bees are well aware that the weather is still cold and do not perk up.

March: Bee growth is well underway. Beekeepers add honeycombs and thoroughly check their beehives. First moves at orange groves begin: worker bees sneak out and feverishly work in and out the hive.

April: the month of bees’ natural proliferation, known as “swarming”. Orange groves in full bloom and bees collect aromatic nectar. Beekeepers are now in the apiaries on a daily basis, implementing the most essential steps of the year.

May: The first harvest of the year, orange honey it is. From mid-May, beekeepers move to fir forests of the mountainous Peloponnese and Central Greece. First estimations about thyme-areas, using beehive-indicators.

June: As honey keeps being extracted in fir forests, thyme starts flowering in coastal areas. Beehives have reached their maximum population of worker bees and are ready to collect and produce honey.

July: The month when most honey is harvested in Greece. From thyme, fir and oak trees to blooming wildflowers of Macedonia, Thrace and Thessaly, beekeepers work tirelessly to collect honey from their hives.

August: This is the month that bees “put themselves together”. Hot summer sun has dried out the main hives and bees are tired from relentless harvesting. It is time for hives to be transferred close to ivy, carob trees and false yellowheads. Tireless and strong beehives can be transferred to pine forests.

September: Beekeepers start moving to pine forests. Chalkidiki, Evia and Thassos are filled with millions of hives from all over Greece. Pine honey is the most important and the last beekeeping forage of the year, which makes it even more special.

October: Pine honey harvesting marks the end of a laborious year. This is the end of a trip that started last December. Bees slow down and get ready for winter.

November: Transfers to overwintering areas begin. The Peloponnese welcomes thousands of bees who will enjoy its mild climate, sunshine and early blooms of January.

December: Beekeepers review last year, the moves they made and the areas they visited. They already start planning for next year, while maintaining their beekeeping equipment and buying new if needed.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Every month the activities of the producers change according to the weather, blooms and the strength of the hives.
