We have all enjoyed honey, this exceptional nutrient that bees have been unfailingly offering for thousands of years. The world of bees is a world of cooperation, diligence and teamwork. So, let’s take a look at how these beautiful insects live and work to give us honey, and find out 10 secrets of their daily life!

These are 10 facts that we bet you didn’t know:

Worker bees decide about the queen! Workers are the real players, deciding whether in the spring the old queen should go and be replaced with a younger and stronger leader.

What is on the drones’ menu? In the first few days of their life, young worker bees take care of their food, and then drones begin to feed themselves with stored honey and pollen.

Quite crowded! A hive may host up to 50,000 bees!

Teamwork! Bees, working all together, build honeycombs, look after young eggs, clean and guard their hive as a team. Every single task is done faster and more efficiently.

Drones, a second role, yet critical! Drones cannot collect food (their sucker is too small), do not produce wax, nor do they feed other bees. In a beehive of about 30,000 – 40,000 bees, there are a few hundred drones, who remain alive for 20 – 30 days. When they fly, they gather in certain areas, called ” Drone congregation areas (DCA)” and wait for the queen to mate with them.

Pollen collectors and travel lovers! Worker bees who gather pollen make 10 routes a day, carrying pollen back to their hive. They, actually, grab the flowers’ anthers and, using their sucker, they drench a quantity of nectar, forming a ball of pollen with their feet. Holding this ball with their back legs, on a special arrangement called “pollen basket”, they transfer it into the hive.

Worker bees, their short but remarkable life! Worker bees live an average of 15-40 days in summer, 30-60 days in spring and fall, and up to 140 days in winter. Winter worker bees keep large reserves of food in their fatty bodies, something that helps them increase their lifespan.

Blind communication! Queen bee emits pheromones, i.e. certain substances which work as orders to worker bees for the tasks they need to do. The other bees cannot see the queen (everything in the hive is dark black), and so they can perceive her only by the smells she emits.

A true queen! Throughout her life, workers pamper their queen, feed and clean her, move her droppings out of the hive and generally take care of her constantly and reverently. She is a queen in every sense of the word! After leaving the cell (16 days since she was an egg), the queen looks for other royal cells, which she destroys so that she is the only one to prevail.

Birthtime for queen bee! When ready to spawn, the queen bee puts her head inside each cell, possibly to check that it is empty. If so, she turns and places her belly into the cell where she lays an egg.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[54

0":"post-2981","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-everything-about-the-bee
["GET
