THE DIET OF ANCIENT GREEKS

Information has been preserved about the diet of ancient Greeks, in which honey seems to have been a key ingredient. There are several testimonies of how honey was used in ancient times, either on its own or as an ingredient in the preparation of sweets (nōgaleuma) and various sauces.
These are some well-known examples of honey preparations, which modern scholars have tried to prepare (by estimating the correct proportions of ingredients):
- Sauces made of strong vinegar, spices and honey for herbs
- Myttotos pie, with cheese, oil, honey and garlic.
- Nogaleuma, a sweet made from linseed and honey.
- Pancakes, dipped in oil and honey.
- Melikraton (Odyssey K-156), a mixture of milk and honey.
- Cheese bread made of flour, cheese crumbs and honey.
