BEEKEEPING MUSEUM

In 1997, EDIAM, the Greek Society for the Preservation of Beekeeping Archives was established, aiming at collecting, preserving, maintaining, studying and exhibiting records of beekeeping material. The goal was actually attained in 2021, through the Institute of Agronomic Sciences – a legacy by Ifigeneia Syngrou, and the newly-established Beekeeping Museum. The Institute of Agronomic Sciences has been providing beekeeping training sessions since 1906!

The Beekeeping Museum, one of its kind in Greece, maintains a very important collection of 47 beehives, 16 made of wood and 2 made of stone, 5 baskets, 3 clay bee smokers and several small objects of great historical value, originating from all over Greece. Attiki-Pittas has donated an old packaging device and commemorative gifts for students /visitors of the museum.

The museum introduces its visitors to the history of greek beekeeping, a continuity of our long tradition, dating back to Aristaeus, the mythological culture hero, and reflected in the world-famous gold Malia Pendant. The traditional beekeeping ritual, still alive from ancient times, is unraveled.

On a daily basis, the museum is visited by students who take part in interactive programs for bees and beekeeping and become familiar with the fascinating world of greek honey.

The programme mainly includes:

  • Oral presentation on beekeeping and the magical world of bees
  • Presentation of harvesting – processing – packaging and tasting procedures
  • Museum tour

The museum offers free admission to all. here
