SUMMERTIME IN THE HIVE

In summer, due to the constant transfer of hives and the high temperatures, beekeepers’ work is really demanding. Their most important task is to make sure that there is always a constant and steady flow of clean and fresh water near the apiary. This is because bees “work” to ensure a stable temperature inside their hive. By moving their wings, they are like a living “A/C system” and thanks to the water provided by their beekeeper, they create optimal conditions for the beehive.

There are also some activities to be done per month. In particular:

June: beekeepers must be updated on the flowering of each area, and calculate the time that bees spend therein. When near firs, this period must not exceed 20-25 days.

July: in southern areas, with heatwaves and drought, beehives should not be directly exposed to the sun. For providing extra shading, beekeepers place grasses on the outer caps of the beehives.

August: Temperatures in August are very high. In pine-clad areas in particular, a water source, near or even inside the hive, is a must. Also, this is the month when beekeepers must be alert to wildfires due to the heat wave.
